One of the founders and directors of the company, Rebecca Bright, is a licensed speech-language pathologist who has significant involvement in production of the company's applications. Read on for my review of the application and how to use it!
The Odd One Out Pack application is focuses on semantic reasoning skills. It can be purchased for the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad for $29.99/20.99 Euro. Upon opening the application, there are four different options as well as two additional settings. The settings chosen will be highlighted in orange once pressed. After settings and options are chosen, press the "Start" button to begin app play. These options/settings include -
If this is your first time using the application, you must create a new user profile by selecting the "New User" button and typing in the user's name using the keyboard, then press "Done". Otherwise, access the Existing User List by selecting "Existing User" or, if you accidentally pressed the "New User" button first, there is access via the "Existing User List" button on that menu as well. User names previously entered will appear in list format with the ability to scroll up and down to find users. Select a user to use the application by pressing his or her name. Only one user may play at a time. You can delete profiles by pressing the "Edit" button within the "Existing User" list, then pressing the red circle with the white minus in it. A red "Delete" button will appear and upon pressing the button, the selected user's profile and information associated with it will be deleted. Make sure once you're done editing/deleting names that you press "Done" to exit "Edit" mode. Multiple users can be stored in this application.
Choose Number of Cards:
This option will decide how many cards will appear on the screen once the application is started. You may choose from 3 or 6 cards at a time.
Choose Difficulty Level:
Easy - Distant Semantic Relationships:
Vocabulary/images on the cards will be different by more than one feature/category
Medium - Moderate Semantic Relationships:
Vocabulary/images on the cards will be different by a couple features; usually they have the same category but different sub-categories
Hard - Close Semantic Relationships:
Vocabulary/images on the cards will be similar in features, categories, and sometimes sub-categories; different by one feature
Note - UK Vocabulary Spelling: if you are in the United States using this application, be aware that the vocabulary is spelled with UK English spellings (aeroplane vs. airplane).
There are 5 pre-determined sets of cards that are the same each time they are played in a specific order. Each set has 25 semantic relationships per set. Each time a set is played, it begins with the same cards depending on the settings.
Choose Card Type:
- Symbol Only - Shows only images of the vocabulary on cards
- Word Only - Shows only the typed vocabulary on cards
- Symbol + Word - Shows both images as well as typed vocabulary below the image on cards
