ABCs 4 SLPs: A is for Apps/Apraxia of Speech - Speech Stickers Review image
SpeechStickers, developed by Carol M. Fast MSPA CCC-SLP of Serious Tree LLC, was created for children with Apraxia of Speech or severe articulation disorders. Children can practice early developing consonants and vowels at the phoneme, CV, or VC levels. This application is great for young students because of the multi-sensory way to practice as well as the age appropriate images and animations. Continue reading to learn more about the application as well as to read my review of the application.

Speech Stickers

Main Page

On the main page of the application, there are three different buttons - Play, Instructions, and Options.

SpeechStickers Menu

Pressing this button will bring you to the "Instructions" page. This page explains how to use the application, appropriate seating when you use the application, how to contact Serious Tree LLC with questions and support, and frequently asked questions.

There is also a YouTube video created by Serious Tree showing how to use the application. There are also others on their website showing the application in use.

The "Options" menu has two different settings to tweak; the completion reinforcement schedule and the orientation setting. You have the ability to change the completion reinforcement schedule to after 5, 10, or 20 trials. In regards to the orientation settings, you can choose how you and your student are sitting (next to or across from each other).

Application Play

When you start the application play, you will see a screen with an arrow to return to the home page, "i" icon to learn more information on how to use the application, the phoneme to be practiced, an arrow that when pressed will rotate the scoring of phonemes, fraction and percentage of correctly produced phonemes, a green check mark for correct productions and red "x" for incorrect productions of sounds, the ability to repeat sounds, and a bar which shows the number of productions left to go on the right hand side.

SpeechStickers Instructions 2

Double-tapping on the phoneme will show a menu of early developing sounds - /m/, /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /n/, /k/, /g/, /s/, /sh/, /a/, /u/, /i/, "uh", and /o/. Children can practice the sound in isolation, CV, or VC syllables. Pressing on the phoneme to be practiced will highlight the sound in red. Then, you can choose to either practice the sound in isolation or CV or VC syllables with choices of various vowels or consonants to practice with the phoneme of choice.

SpeechStickers Phoneme Selection

Once you have selected what is going to be practiced, choose the character in which to use as a "sticker" on the screen. The character pressed will be highlighted in red. Each character has his or her own voice so that students can hear various voices producing the same sound. Also, depending on the phoneme/CV/VC selected, the characters' mouths change to show articulatory production/placement of the sound.

Touch the middle of the screen to place the "sticker" of the character and to hear the character produce the sound. Then, the user should practice saying the sound as well. You cannot advance until the production of the phoneme is scored as correct or incorrect. Once it is scored, the circle will advance on the vertical bar on the side stating how many productions the user has left to go until their animated reward.

After all trials have been completed, the child can choose which animation he or she would like to play out of ten. Once the animation has been completed, you can keep playing the application and scoring productions. When you are done with your session with the application, before returning to the home screen, make sure that you record the amount of correct productions elsewhere.

What I Like About This Application:

  • This application focuses on the first level of sound production, the phoneme level, as well as CV and VC syllables.
  • The illustrations and animations are perfect for young children.
  • The fact that the characters' mouths change each time the phoneme is changed as well as that each character has a different voice is phenomenal for students learning articulatory production.
  • This application is easy to use, has a simple background, and is not distracting for users.
  • I love that the adult scoring of correct sound productions can be flipped around so that the clinician can sit across from the student and the fact that sounds must be scored to advance/place another sticker on the screen. This allows the clinician to be in control of the session as well as view the students' mouth as they produce sounds and give specific feedback.
What I Would Like to See in Future Updates:

  • I am a big fan of user profiles in applications to record data and graph student progress. I would love the capability of data collection.
  • I would love to see an expansion of this application (maybe through an in-app purchase) for additional phonemes. This would be great for students with severe articulation disorders to work on later developing sounds once they have mastered earlier developing sounds.
Therapy Uses:

  • Apraxia of Speech/Articulation: This application was developed for this purpose. Use the application to focus on sound production at the phoneme and syllable levels. For more advanced students, have them create words with the phoneme being worked on.
  • Auditory Bombardment: Allow the child to place the character stickers anywhere on the page to hear phonemes stated aloud.
  • Fluency: Practice easy onset from consonants onto vowels by selecting CV words to practice.
  • Sound/Letter Identification: Have students select the letter on a separate page that matches the sound played.
  • Phonological Awareness: Have students create CVC words from the VC or CV syllables.

SpeechStickers is available for the iPad for $14.99.

Consonantly Speaking was given an application code by the developer to review the application on this website. No other form of compensation was received.
