There are three buttons on the main page - Shake It, Quiz Me, and Story Starters. Choose one of these three activities to begin application play. You can view a YouTube video of the application below:
Once an activity is chosen, a random sentence will appear. There will also be multiple buttons at the bottom of the screen for different settings.
The menu page allows users to switch between different activities and customize settings.
You can view information about the developer of this application at the bottom of the "Menu" page including their website, more information about the application, the ability to write an iTunes review, and contact information to e-mail Artgig Apps.
The Sound effects of the application can be turned on and off via a toggle switch on the "Menu".
Pressing this button determines the background of the application as well as the theme of the sentences. You can choose between five different themes:
- Shake Starter
- Shake It - generates random silly sentences each time you shake the iPad/press the "Shake it!" button. You can also tap words for definitions.
- Story Starter - shake the application/press the "Shake it!" button to see a story starter. Tap words to see definitions.
- Quiz Me! - random sentences will appear and children will be asked to find various grammatical concepts within the sentence (i.e. nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions determined via on/off toggle switches in the "Quiz Options" in the "Menu"). When a student finds the correct word(s), he or she must tap them. If the word/words was/were chosen correctly, all of the other words in the sentence will disappear, a star will fill in, and the "Next" button will be available to press to move on to the next sentence. All of the stars must be filled in to move on to the next level. You can press the question mark button to view a definition of what type of word(s) you need to find. After a couple of levels, the amount of sentences/stars to be completed increases.
When you find a sentence that makes you smile, make sure to press the "Fave" button. The sentence will then be added to the favorites menu when you press the "Favorites" button. You can access your favorite sentences at any time within the application and delete them by pressing the "Edit" button if you fill it up! You can also view your sentence history under the "Favorites" button.
Share your favorite sentences via e-mail, Twitter, or copy the phrase to the clipboard to use in another application.
What I Like About This Application:
- I like the sounds of the application; I'm not going to lie - they make me giggle!
- The randomness of the sentences in the application make it fun to play!
- The fact that sentences can be used as story starters and students can play a grammar quiz is perfect for educational settings!
- It is great that students can tap on a word and view its definition as well as the type of word because that is great for vocabulary development and grammatical skills.
- Due to the amount of words within this application, I am not sure if this is economically feasible, but it would be great if a student pressed on a word, if it could also be read aloud. That would make the application even better for students who have trouble reading or with vocabulary development!
- It would be neat to see some more grammatical/syntactical concepts in the Quiz portion of the application such as pronouns, adverbs, punctuation, capital letters, etc.
- Vocabulary - A student can press on a word to view its grammatical type and definition.
- Grammar - When pressing on a word, it will tell if it is a noun, verb, adjective, preposition, or conjunction. Have students play the quiz to identify grammatical concepts. You can choose which type of word the student is to find in sentences via the "Menu". Talk about the type of noun (person, place, thing, plural noun, or irregular plural noun), verb (regular, irregular, present, past, future, or continuous), or conjunction (coordinating, correlative, or subordinate) a word is. Discuss the phrases surrounding a conjunction word (dependent or independent) and the type of sentence it is (simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex).
- Expressive Language - Have a student create their own silly sentence or use as many of the words in the sentence shown on the application in a new sentence. Have the student find a word in a grammatical category he or she is working on and then create a new sentence using the word. Use the "Story Starter" activity on the application to have the student create his or her own story based on the sentence!
- Articulation/Fluency/Voice - Have the student read the random sentence aloud using appropriate speech sounds, fluency or voice strategies. If the student is working on a specific sound, have him or her keep shaking the application until he or she finds a sentence with his or her sound in it to state aloud.
- Auditory Processing - Read the sentence aloud to a student. Then, have him or her repeat it back to you.
