I own 80% of the articulation applications on the market but have only reviewed 50% of them. I would love to keep reviewing them so that it is easier to compare them all. Here I am continuing my quest to review I Can Articulate SLP. This is one of the few articulation applications that includes working on sounds at the reading level in paragraphs. Main Page

There are three different buttons on the Main Page of the application - Practice, Create Instructor/Login, and Support.


Press the "Support" button to open an e-mail form to e-mail the developer with any support related questions or concerns.

Create Instructor/Login

This page allows you to create an instructor for the application by typing in login information, personal information, and license information. Then, press create once you have completed filling in the information. Then, you will see a Login button where you can login as an instructor.

User Profiles

Once you have logged into the application, you can access the student profiles. Press the "+" button to add a student. A form will appear where you can add the students' name, address, phone number, and date of birth. You do not need to add all of the information if you do not want to. Students can be placed under active or inactive profiles. Within the student profiles, you can press the "Setup" button to edit the instructor, change password, or turn on and off the voice model.

Manage Student Profiles

By pressing the "Manage" button, you will be able to manage the student chosen's information, view/build reports, and view session details. You can also delete a students' profile by pressing the "Delete Student" button on the Manage Students page.

Application Play

If you are not logged in, press the green "Practice" button. If you have set up an account, log-in and choose a user profile. Next, choose the type of practice by pressing within the rectangle underneath the "choose an activity" text. You can then highlight the scroll wheel between practice in words, sentences, or stories. Next, choose the speech sound to practice by pressing within the next rectangle and highlighting the phoneme or blend on the scroll wheel. Finally, choose the position of the sound within the word to have the student practice between initial, medial, final, or any. Pressing on one of these buttons will highlight the choice in orange. If a phoneme or blend is only found in certain positions of words. Press the "Start" button once all choices have been made.

I Can Articulate S Words

An image and word will appear on the screen. If you have enabled there to be a voice model, the user can press the image to hear the word spoken aloud by a narrator. Press the orange circle button to record the user's speech. Press the button again to stop recording and then the blue triangle inside of a circle button to playback the recording. To view the next word, press the green "Next Word/Sentence/Story" button at the top of the screen. Sentences and stories do not contain pictures and will not be read aloud. However, the words within the sentence/story will be highlighted in green. On the story page, you can press and swipe on the story to view the remainder if the story does not fit in the box. There are about 2-3 stories per sound/position within the word (unless you press "any" position in the word; then you will get more stories).

You can also choose whether or not you would like there to be review of correct/incorrect words. If you choose to review the words and whether or not they are produced correctly, a red "x" for incorrect productions and a green checkmark for correct productions will appear at the top. After ten productions, a prompt will appear asking if you would like to review or continue. This will appear every ten words. Press "Done" at the top of the application when you are finished or wait until the user finishes all of the words/sentences/stories.


Press the "Reports" button in the Manage Student menu to build a report. Select the date(s) to be included. Then, select the sound and position in the word to be reported on and press "Build Report". You will then see data points for students based on the date and accuracy. 80-100% is shaded in green as well. You can then e-mail the report as a PDF file by pressing the "E-mail Report" button. This will bring up an e-mail with the report attached to send.

Session Detail

To view one or more session details, press "Session Detail" in the Manage Student menu. Then, choose the sound and position of the word to view sessions that match the criteria. The sound, its position, and session date will appear once "Display Sessions" is pressed. Then, choose the session by pressing on it and a list of words practiced will appear with the total practiced at the top of the list. The session date and students' name will show at the top of the page. On the right hand side of the page, corresponding with each word, will show checkmarks and "x" marks for correctly and incorrectly perceived responses by the student and teacher. You can select a word and press the play button to hear its recording played back.

What I Like About This Application:

  • The application is perfect for my secondary education students who are usually working on their sounds in carryover (reading stories/conversation).
  • The application's style is clean and not distracting.
  • I love the fact that you can have the student record each word in a set that he or she is working on and then have the speech-language pathologist and the student each score his or her responses to compare! That is great for self-monitoring!
  • The report style used in this application is great due to the fact that it is on a data point chart and 80%+ is shaded in. This is great for students who want to view their own progress.
  • The application is easy to use and you can hear the narrator state each word if needed.
  • The fact that words with speech sounds are highlighted in sentences/stories definitely helps students get ready to be aware of what is coming up next.
  • Security on the application is great due to the fact that instructors must log-in. The ability to save multiple profiles this way is more secure.
What I Would Like to See in Future Updates:

  • Having the review prompt appear every ten words was a bit much after a while. I would like the ability to choose when that appears for different students (even at the end of the session) because when we get on a roll in the session it is hard to stop!
  • I say this with a lot of applications, but I would always like the ability to use the application with multiple students at a time in a group and also work on multiple sounds at a time.
  • I would also like there to be an option where only the teacher reviews for the students who are not at the stage to rate their own productions. (Don't take away the other feature, just an idea for an addition!).
Therapy Use:

  • Articulation - Choose the sound, position in the word, and level to practice that the student is working on. Then, play through each of the slides. Record the students' sounds and playback for scoring as necessary.
  • Fluency - Have the student read words, sentences, and stories to practice his or her fluency strategies.
  • Voice - Have the student read sentences and stories to practice his or her vocal strategies.
